"Stuck on you"

I watched this movie about five or six times, if I need to write something on movie, it must be this one.

It is talking about a true story. In Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, the siamese twins, Bob (Matt Damon) and Walt (Greg Kinnear) had a successful fast food restaurant and were beloved by the locals. Each one of them had their own characteristics and hobby. Bob was shy and love sports; while Walt was more opened and he loved to be an actor. The main story talks about the conjoined brother decided to move to L.A., because Walt wanted to pursuit his dream - be a movie star- and also Bob could meet his girl who corresponded with him through internet for years. With Bob’s help and Walt’s own talent, they eventually became famous. Just when everything went well they decided to get separated. After that Bob went back to his small town, and Walt continued his career in Hollywood. But at the end of the movie, Walt joined Bob to stay in their hometown, while enjoying the time with his brother and friends.

Several things touched me after watched the movie. First, even normal people sometimes cannot do well when they are facing the difficulties, but the saimese twins dared to do and did well. Bob found a great girl who can tolerate his physical limitation and Walt keep pursuing his dream, knowing the existence of the other conjoined brother. And in the end they both succeed. Second, sometimes ordinary people do unordinary things. Bob decided not to go for separate operation after the awareness of his brother Walt might have low chance to survive in the operation while he was more secure. He chose to live conjoined with his brother for many years. He sacrificed his freedom by not letting his brother to take the risk. On the other hand, when Walt knew that the conjoined figure might affect the relationship between Bob and his girlfriend, he decided to separate. He took the risk to help Bob to fulfill his wishes. In the end, the operation was successful, but before that, every decision was made with great selfless courage.

The story shows the great spirit of the twins. It encouraged me to pursue my goal faithfully but optimistically. Also to achieve the goal for the happiness for everyone, we need to learn to be self-giving and toleratant.

I am going to watch it again after I post this.

Love the family, not hate it

“Mum, I hate this family and I hate you!” shouted from the actress. This is one of the scenes we usually see in the drama. Idiom also says, “Every family has a skeleton in the closet.” There are always conflicts exist in our lives among family members, even they are closed, blood-related.

The emotion may become complicated when people are dealing with family relationships while pursuing their own demands. Usually it is caused by the conflicts of faith and public interest, such as disagreement of outgoing from the parents. Further more, poor communication for sharing opinions is made after conflicts are occurred. Family members are either shy or over thinking of others thoughts so that they intentionally give up to express themselves. This results the acumination of conflicts and distrust among the members.

Although the emotional conflicts are complicated and uneasy to solve, achievement should be made to bring the benefit to every member. First, it is necessary to have good communication among the family members. Conversations should be made frequently during daily lives in the family. It will help the members to exchange their thoughts and feelings. Through the communication, it helps to clear the misunderstanding, build up common opinions and form the positive attitude to face the conflicts. On the other hand, it is important that people should show respect among each other even with closed relationship. Sometimes the argument just begins with one’s impulsion. Learning of tolerating others’ defects may help to ease the emotional tension. Learning of understanding and bestowal would be necessary to reduce the chances of arguments. Furthermore, taking attention on managing one’s own mood will help to ease the tension among the other members, as people will get influenced among each other. No one wants to start a fight while seeing a warmly smiling face on the other side.

On the whole, good communication, learning to control and managing individual’s mood will develop emotional intelligence, which will help to ease the conflicts between individual and the family. Love the family, no conflicts.

How will high emotional intelligence enhance engineering graduate’ contribution to their organization/profession?

High emotional intelligence may help engineering graduates to have better performance and contribution to the organization/profession. Engineering graduates’ work may involve projects that are related to human life’s safety or huge amount of investment fund. Handling the projects is sometimes extremely stressful. With high EQ, the individual should be able to manage his/her mood accordingly while facing the stress from the work. So that he/she may be able to process the job smoothly without any negative influence from stress. On the other hand, nowadays, technologies are rapidly and energetically developed. Most of the technologies may not be taught in colleges but to be trained to employees during the period of their service for the organization. The individual might be benefited when they are self-motivated to learn more from the seniors or experienced persons. The more they learn, the more they enrich their knowledge and experience, which would benefit to their job performance. Therefore, with good self-motivation, the graduate could perform better when comparing to the others. Another reason is that engineering involves projects that require team-work. Good interpersonal skills might be helpful in controlling and managing the relationship with the teammates, which results in meeting their goal effectively and efficiently. All in all, emotional intelligence does help to enhance the performance and contribution for engineering graduates to their organization in certain aspects.

Different aspects of emotional intelligence are needed between two different professions.

Different aspects of emotional intelligence are needed between engineering and soldiery. Firstly, there are different requirements for the personal sentiment between the two professions. As an engineer, he/she may not require high self-motivation as compare to the soldiery. Project schedule will help the engineer to achieve accomplishment independently to individual’s self-motivation. But for a soldier, he/she should be motivated to serve his/her country. The level how the soldiers are motivated, will directly influent the result of the battle even to the war. Secondly, different interpersonal skills are required for the two professions. For engineering, conclusions are always made by group discussions or team co-operation. Therefore, it is important for the engineer to have good interpersonal skills, like communication skills, to make efficiently and effectively decision. On the other hand, for soldiery, decisions are made almost by certain individual from the top down, for example from president to general, general to commander. It is also required team work, but that will be more depends on tactical training but less involve of personal opinion. Therefore, the need of interpersonal skills are different. Thirdly, self-awareness is more required for engineering. For example, an engineer will only work properly when he/she knows what his/her is capable of. For example, cockiness of an engineer may cause of over look of mistakes and leads to failure of works. However, for a soldier, he/she will be required to obey the order from higher level. Individual’s self-awareness may not affect the progress deeply. All in all, engineering and soldiery require different level of emotional intelligence in some aspects.
